What's Carly Cooking Up Now?

Hey good lookin’, what ‘cha got cookin’? Well if it’s anything from Millie LaRue & Mummy Cooking with Friends then it’s gotta be good.

Over 350 recipes of fine human cuisine from around the world. Miss Millie LaRue (a little Yorkie just like me) and her human, Darsey Mitchell collected recipes from many people from all parts of the globe. At only $35.00 that’s like just a wee penny per recipe and a portion of the proceeds go toward dog rescue and shelter organizations! How great is that?? However, I, Carly must interject that the best part of this cookbook is a whole section devoted to all sorts of delectable recipes for dogs, starting on page 247. This cookbook also makes a pawtastic gift for someone you love...or someone you hope will cook for you. Click on the link above and order your full color hardcopy as soon as possible!  The recipes are howlingly good!

We decided we’d choose something for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and of course a dessert for our two day cook-a-thon. There is such a big selection in this cookbook we took nearly two hours deciding on what we wanted to make. Some of that time we were getting lost in reading the history of some of the recipes submitted by the people.
We finally decided on which recipes we wanted to try and did our ingredient shopping on a Saturday evening. We knew we needed to spread out all this cooking over two days since Mom only has Sundays and Mondays to cook up a storm. Ingredients purchased we got up early Sunday to weather that storm! Mom and I put on our aprons from Harlow &Grace’s Cooking With Carly collection to get started whipping up some of these recipes.
Breakfast: Fairy Cakes (pg 40) Mom’s not big on that most important meal of the day, preferring instead to sip on her coffee but even she couldn’t turn down a fairy cake. (She substituted blueberries so she could share them with me and my fur-sisters!)
Lunch: After overindulging in those fairy cakes Mom planned to keep lunch light. She chose the Baked Potato Soup (pg 65) but it was such a hearty dish it could have been a meal in and of itself! Of course, some of that “heartiness” may have come from this recipe change: the recipe suggested “low-fat” sour cream which Mom and I laughed and laughed as we don’t do anything “low-fat” so we used the full fat sour cream and threw in an extra dollop for good measure!

Monday morning I couldn’t help but notice Mom brought out some of the Fairy Cakes she apparently hid yesterday and got herself all cozy with her morning cup of coffee. I sat dutifully at her feet and let out an occasional whimper to let her know that Fairy Cakes were meant to be shared. Finally, she relented as she always does and gave me a bite.  She said, that’s it, but I have a funny feeling she was still tucking those things away for a snack later on. After she did all those other morning things she once again got our aprons out and started laying out the ingredients to prep for dinner.
Dinner:  To get things rolling a very tasty appetizer from my little friend, Zoey Bear’s mom, Pam. Happy’s Holiday Cheese Balls (page 33) and Lettuce and Smoked Asparagus (pg 73) kicked off dinner. Soon followed was Magic Chicken Tenders (pg 115), Greek Styled Potatoes (pg 153), Deviled Eggs (pg 24) and Buttermilk Biscuits (pg 51). Being the good pet parent Mom is she suggested we make extra Chicken Tenders so us doggies could enjoy dinner too.

Dessert: We were all too stuffed after that scrumptious dinner but since we had eaten a late afternoon dinner we were ready for some dessert come evening.  With all that dinner prep earlier Mom decided she’d give Possum Pie (pg 206) a try, mostly because she knows my obsession with squirrels and somehow the word possum made her think of squirrels and that made her think of me. I’m not sure I fully understand her reasoning either but whatever she let me have some of the Cool Whip so who am I to complain?? Couldn’t seem to taste any possum though, not that I ever ate any possum but I’m sure it would have tasted a bit gamey.
Dessert was enjoyed outside on the deck with the warmth of a September evening soon to become a memory. Mom made room for a Celebration Cocktail (pg 33) celebrating the fact she hasn’t cooked that much for a very long time! Exhausted from all that taste-testing I did I needed a nap. Since Mom was still celebrating with another cocktail I found an empty deck chair and decided I’d watch Mom’s celebrating with one eye opened. She promised me I could pick a recipe from the dog fare section of the cookbook. Next weekend my fur-sisters and I will pull out the good doggie china for a tea party and some doggie fare befitting an upper crust pup!
